The Journey of Spiritual Growth

Whether you are just beginning to explore Christianity, or you are a long-time follower of Jesus, you are on a spiritual journey. Like any journey, a successful spiritual journey requires knowing where you want to go, deciding what you need to get there, and then moving forward. At Grace we want to support you in identifying next steps needed in your spiritual journey, and then to provide the classes, resources, and experiences that will help you make intentional progress.

To help you pick the class that is best for you on your journey toward Christ, each adult class has a category code to explain it's emphasis:

B/T – Bible, Theology & Christian Worldview

BC – Biblical Relationships

SP – Spiritual Practices

IOW – Impacting Our World

TR – Training

Renovation of the Heart - Putting On the Character of Christ

Ron Hoover

Room 207                                              Category: Spiritual Practices/Bible & Theology

Dates: December 6 to February 21

This course will be conducted using a combination of video teaching material, panel discussion, group discussion and discovery of biblical concepts in conjunction with the author Dr. Dallas Willard.  These concepts will focus on the process necessary for the Christian to move along the pathway of sanctification.

Willard states "all of the essential parts of the human self are effectively organized around God, as they are restored and sustained by him. Spiritual transformation in Christ is the process leading to that ideal end, and its result is love of God with all of the heart, soul, mind and strength, and of the neighbor as oneself."

"How do I get there"?  Our study of Renovation of the Heart will present a realistic guide to discipleship and the real challenges of Christian formation that help to answer that inquiry. It lays a foundation for understanding the ruin and restoration of humanity by discussing human nature and its components, how they operate and how they are renewed.  Each student will receive a study guide for the course.

Do Science and the Bible Conflict?

Rich Feaster

Room 201                                              Category: Bible & Theology

Dates: December 6 to January 10

For many people, science has sounded the death knell for God. It has shown that God probably doesn’t exist. Today all the things we previously used God to explain can now be understood as produced by natural processes rather than an all-powerful deity. Even if God does exist, he’s irrelevant – a bystander in the cosmic drama that began with a Big Bang, became more complex, and eventually achieved consciousness by means of undirected evolution. This drama has now culminated in a part of the universe – humanity – looking back on itself and learning where it came from.

Has science made religion obsolete? Is the Bible a vestige from an era when people were uncritical and would accept anything without proof? Why shouldn’t we throw out the Bible in favor of the more reliable truths of science?  Come join us for the next six weeks as we explore these tough questions.

6 Week Classes: January 17 - February 21

Christians and the Arts

Dr. Raymond Ide, Guest teacher from Lancaster Bible College

Room 203                                              Category: Bible & Theology

Christians have often been suspicious of the arts, argues Philip Ryken.  Is that true?  And if so, why is that?  Through a combination of lectures, visuals, and discussions, we plan to explore how various talented people over the centuries have represented their spiritual vision.  During the course we will look at the lives of C. S. Lewis, the Puritan writer John Milton, the artist Vincent van Gogh, and the Russian Nobel Prize winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

Please join us for this 6 week course on four World Religions: Islam, Roman Catholism, Jehovah Witnesses and Mormonism. We will examine the beliefs and practices of each one and then compare them with what the Bible teaches. This course will be a valuable tool for parents of teens in order to fully understand the differences. Each session will close with a Q and A time.

How Does Anyone Know that God Exists?

Pastor Shannon

Room 202                                              Category: Bible & Theology

Dates: January 17-February 21

Are you or someone you know seeking the truth about the existence of God?  Are you asking these questions:  Is Anybody Out There?  What is God Really Like?  Does God Care about What Happens to Us?  How Can a Person Get to Know God?  In this six week course we will openly and honestly discuss these and other questions.  Come and join the discussion as we look at what the Bible says and search for answers together.  This is a great class to invite your friend to join so you can explore and seek answers about God together.

Spiritual Warfare 101 and 201

Edie Landis

Room 204                                              Category: Bible & Theology

Dates: January 17-February 21

Ephesians Chapter 6 makes it clear:  If you are a Christian you are at war.  But do you know how to fight that war to win?  Learn how to spot spiritual attacks, cultivate invincible faith, and find freedom from demonic influences over your life and the lives of others by discovering who you are in Christ and how to wield the weapons God provides through Christ Jesus and His salvation.  Participants will be required to read portions of the book, THE INVISIBLE WAR, What Every Believer Needs To Know About Satan, Demons, and Spiritual Warfare, by Chip Ingram prior to coming to class.  Each class will consist of a brief review, followed by discussion and Q & A. Please note that Spiritual Warfare 301 and 401 will complete this study and run in the Spring term from April 18-May 23.

Revelation

Chuck Lewis

Room 205                                              Category: Bible & Theology

Dates: December 6 to February 21

We're all interested in what the future holds. What can we expect? Is there a way to know what lies ahead? Where should we look for answers? How will future events affect our families and loved ones? Human efforts at predicting the future are notoriously inaccurate. Self-proclaimed seers and prophets have been proven wrong time and time again. But there is a sure way to know what the future holds. It's written in advance in the pages of the Bible.

The book of Revelation—the last book in the Bible—is to many people, the most confusing. They find its strange symbols and images puzzling and mysterious. But it need not be so. The book's very name means “a revealing, a way to gain understanding.” Its first verse tells us it was written to reveal "things which must shortly take place."   This study will take you through the major themes of the book of Revelation, helping you discover how it all fits together.
